Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

The graduate certificate in Geographical Information Systems provide students with knowledge and experience to compete and work in the field of GIS both in public and private sector. The combination of courses focus on the acquisition, storing, visualization, modeling, and analysis of information on spatial phenomena with some emphasis on geospatial applications.

    The certificate require a total of 15 credit hours. These are allocated as follows:

    Section A - Core Courses: total 9 credit hours Section B - Electives, 3 credit hours from the following:
    • Geol 6389 Advanced GIS for Geologists
    • CIVI 7397 Advanced Engineering GIS
    • GIS courses from other depts. (e.g. Social Sciences, etc.)
    Section C - Supervised by qualified professor in the area of speciality. Senior research project (4396) for well-qualified undergraduates, selected topics in geology (6397), or thesis or dissertation hours (7398, 8398) for graduates.

    Admission Requirements  [top]

    Students seeking this certificate must have an undergraduate degree and have graduate or post baccalaureate status at the University of Houston . With permission of the Department, selected well-qualified undergraduates will be allowed to participate in the certification program.

    New studnets need to apply for Post Baccalaureate Admission. The Office of Admissions and Office of International Admission require an official transcript showing the degree earned from your former institution(s). If you cannot obtain this transcript, a certifying letter from the Registrar's Office indicating graduation date (not anticipated date) may be used. The letter must show the school seal and signature of the Registrar. Letters from other departments other than the Registrar will not be considered.

    Cost of Course - Estimated $143.00 per credit hours - Resident (Ex: $143.00x3 cr. hrs= $429) $418.00 per credit hours - Non-Resident (Ex: $418.00 x 3 cr. hrs= $1254) This is doesn't include any university fee
